MAACS Administrative Support Specialist

The Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System (MAACS) seeks a full-time administrative support specialist to work in Lansing, Michigan. Under the direction of the MAACS Administrator and Deputy Administrator, the specialist will perform a variety of activities to support the system for ensuring the independent assignment of quality appellate counsel in all indigent felony appeals throughout the state. This includes the MAACS web-based assignment system and the roster of private attorneys who accept court-appointed felony appeals throughout the state. Responsibilities may include:

  • Compiling and maintaining detailed information regarding roster attorneys in database systems
  • Ensuring accuracy of local and regional assignment lists
  • Analyzing statewide roster distribution needs
  • Reviewing appellate counsel appointment orders to ensure accuracy
  • Reviewing appellate counsel payment vouchers to ensure accuracy
  • Interacting with roster attorneys and trial court staff
  • Processing and reporting of requests for appellate counsel and other correspondence
  • Preparing reports for management
  • Preparing correspondence on behalf of management where appropriate

Qualifications: The Administrative Support Specialist must understand and apply the MAACS Regulations, Minimum Standards for Indigent Criminal Appellate Defense Services, the Michigan Court Rules, and other administrative procedures and direction. Must have technical aptitude, including the ability to understand relational databases and agency data systems, and be proficient with general office equipment and computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and the Internet. The position requires planning, problem-solving, analysis, creativity, and thoughtful decision-making. Approaches are generally defined by policy and practice, but discretionary analysis is frequently required. Report and correspondence preparation require a high degree of writing proficiency. Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to communicate, meet, and deal effectively with others. Must have the ability to determine work priorities and work under deadlines. Must have knowledge of trial court, state, and federal law and legal concepts. Preferred candidates will have an associate degree or certification as a paralegal, legal assistant, or a degree in a related field and three or more years of experience in a law office, court or other legal setting.

Starting salary: $44,700 plus fringe benefits including health, dental, vision, life, 401k, and paid holidays.
