SADO Offers Training for Stovall Resentencing Hearings
December 12, 2022, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM, 7 CLE
On December 12, 2022, SADO will conduct a virtual training for defenders and defense teams who will be handling the resentencings mandated by the Michigan Supreme Court’s opinion in People v Stovall (2022). Stovall held that a parolable life sentence for a youth convicted of second-degree murder violates Michigan’s constitution.
According to records from the Michigan Department of Corrections, 77 people are serving sentences of life with parole for offenses committed as youth; each person will require a new sentencing hearing.
The December 12 training will cover a range of topics, including a legal overview, mitigation investigation, record collection, using and evaluating MDOC records, and preparation of mitigation and social history reports.
The agenda includes session descriptions and faculty bios, as well as registration information.
